Chapter Sixteen
Christian tapped her bedroom door and peeked inside. âAre you coming to the game?â
Christian had never asked Carly if she wanted to watch him play. Something in his voice made her want to reach out to him.
âI need a ride,â he added. âI left my bike up at Sarahâs last night.â
Of course.
Hunter would be there, and she wanted to see him. âSure.â
The game against Harper High was always the most attended of the season. Harper and Fillmore had some competition going that stemmed centuries. Or at least if felt that way. Christian was already in the car when she met him.
âAre you okay?â he asked.
Nope. âYeah.â
âListen, Iâm sorry about how I acted yesterday. We just want you to be safe.â He handed her her cell phone. âSarah found it last night.â
She took it. âWe?â
âHunter told me what happened.â
âIâm good. Really.â She gave him a smile she wished looked real, but he shook his head. Her brother knew her too well.
Reaching the football field, Carly thought about just dropping Christian off but decided to stay. She was lost in the vast crowd until Christian wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
âCome on. I have reserved seating.â
Of course, he would. He led her right behind the cheer squad. She had great seats and saw lucky number thirteen near the sidelines in close proximity to Sarah, talking and smiling. Hunter had an older feel to him, but here in the field, he looked good. He belonged here. She blinked away the moisture that threatened to spill tears and sat down.
âIs that spot taken?â Rory asked.
A splitting image of his younger brother, she couldnât help but to smile at him. He squeezed through as she pulled her knees inside. âI didnât know you were a fan.â
âA football fan, yes.â He gave her a smile that reminded her of Hunter. âI didnât know you were a Hunter fan.â He winked at her.
âIâm a Christian fan,â she lied.
âRight, your brother.â He said it as if he didnât believe her one bit.
Hunter approached closer to them. Rory reached over and whispered into her ear. She felt his hot breath on her neck, and when she turned to him, she saw tiny specks of green in his eyes. âYou want to get him wound up?â Rory whispered.
Before she could answer he laced his hands with hers, lifted them up in front of him, and rubbed her palm with his thumb. Carlyâs eyes went back to Hunter, who watched them while putting on his helmet with more fervor than necessary. Was he jealous?
Carly pulled her hand away and leaned into Rory to whisper the truth to him. âHe doesnât like me that way.â
âJust watch.â
Carly did watch as four minutes into the game Hunter caught the football and slammed into number twenty-eight of the opposing team and didnât even lose his step. Touchdown. He snapped the ball in the end zone.
Carly laughed. âIt doesnât mean anything. Heâs good.â
Rory shook his head, but the smile remained on his lips.
âYou like messing with him, donât you?â
He shrugged.
